Hearing Healthcare Services

Hearing Assessments
Provides a measure of someone's hearing sensitivity and quantifies hearing loss using loudness and tones.  A combination of puretones using air and bone conduction allows the audiologist to determine the type of hearing loss.  A tympanogram is also performed to determine the health of the eardrum and the status of the middle ear structures.  Acoustic reflexes are assessed to rule out more serious auditory dysfunction.

Hearing Screenings

Is a quick way to determine whether somone has normal hearing or a hearing loss.  A hearing screening also determines the  shape and degree of hearing loss.  However, it does not provide information on the type of hearing loss, status of the eardrum and middle ear, or assess more malignant causes of hearing loss.  A hearing screening cannot be used to generate a prescription for a hearing aid.

At Northern Hearing we take a clinical approach to determining hearing loss and counselling but the hearing aid prescription is  personalized based on patient factors, such as lifestyle, areas of  hearing difficulty, eyesight, dexterity, aesthetics, and price.  Northern Hearing Inc. can prescribe and service all major manufacturer hearing aid models.  Professional care is provided to ensure client satisfaction, including a 90 day return or exchange guarantee.  Hearing aid cleaning, checking, and repairing as well as products to maintain and protect your hearing aids are all provided at Northern Hearing Inc.

Tinnitus Counselling and Management

Tinnitus is the term used for noises or sounds which are heard in one or both ears or in the head which do not come from an external source. They are often described as a high-pitched ringing but can also be described as a buzzing, hissing, pulsing, whistling, roaring, or various other sounds. Tinnitus can be very mild in loudness and only noticeable in a quiet room or it can become extremely loud and annoying to the point where the sufferer hears nothing else. It can be present all of the time or occur intermittently.  Tinnitus is a symptom of dysfunction somewhere in the auditory system but it is often not possible to determine where the dysfunction lies and such there is no know cure for tinnitus, although some treatments work for some people.  In rare cases tinnitus can indicate something more malignant, so a hearing assessment is recommended.

Counseling - aimed at reducing the stress and distraction associated with the tinnitus. It is important to change the person's perception of the tinnitus.

Masking - the use of an external electronic device to produce sound which can cover up or mask the tinnitus can sometimes be very effective in providing relief from tinnitus. Occasionally the tinnitus can be inhibited for short and sometimes long periods of time when the masking sound is removed (residual inhibition).

Ear Wax Removal

Ear wax is perfectly normal and is produced to form a protective coating over the skin in the ear canal. Ears are normally self-cleaning – the movement of your jaw whilst eating and talking helps to move the wax along the canal where it will usually fall out naturally without you noticing.  Sometimes though, you will need help with removing a build up of ear wax and we are qualified to do this for you quickly and safely. When wearing hearing aids occluding wax can create whistling, discomfort, and can result in hearing aid breakdowns.
